What is Home Health Care?

Home Health Care allows individuals to remain comfortable and independent even when they are sick. This service, often covered under Medicare, provides medical care in the patients’ own homes or places of residence.

Home health care can be used for a variety of purposes, such as:

  • Nursing home health care treatment for an acute illness. This includes IV therapy, blood sugar level and blood pressure monitoring, physical therapy, strengthening and rehabilitation with the aid from a nurse aide or personal assistant, etc.
  • Occupational & Physical Therapy transitioning after surgery

Home Care vs. Home Health Care

Although the terms “home care” and “home health care” sound very similar, they are not interchangeable. Home care includes non-clinical support, such as preparing meals and companionship, whereas home health care, sometimes known as “home health,” delivers expert medical assistance.

Home Health Care Services include the following:

  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Administration of prescription
  • medications or shots
  • Medical tests
  • Monitoring of health status
  • Wound care

Home care services include assisting with many daily needs:

  • Companionship — reading aloud, chatting, and in-home activities
  • Transportation to appointments
  • Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) like dressing, bathing, and grooming
  • Meal preparation or delivery
  • Medication management and reminders, but not directly administering medications
  • Cleaning and organizing
  • Help writing checks or managing finances

Paying for Home Care vs. Home Health Care

Medical services are typically included in-home health care, whereas home care is more focused on providing daily personal help. As a rule, insurance will pay for the following types of services:

Medicare

When ordered by a physician, Medicare and private insurance plans cover home health care. If you believe it would be advantageous, talk to your loved one’s doctor about home health care. This service is offered to any senior who qualifies for Medicare.

Medicaid

For income-qualified seniors, Medicaid covers both types of care, however, coverage amounts vary by state.

Private Pay

Private pay is typical for home care services. It is only necessary for home health when the service is not authorized by a physician.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Home care is only covered by Long-Term Care Insurance if it is already covered by your loved one’s existing plan. For specific concerns, you may confirm with your insurance representative.
